The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Science and Technology Directorate established the Cyber Security Research and Development Center in March 2004. The Center is the umbrella under which the Department’s cyber security R&D activities are coordinated and performed. Charged with creating partnerships between government and private industry, the venture capital community and the research community, the Center develops and fortifies security technology to better protect the cyber infrastructure of the United States.
The Center supports the DHS’s responsibility to secure a substantial portion of our nation’s critical infrastructure (including information and telecommunications, transportation, postal and shipping, emergency services, and government continuity). As the DHS does not own or control this infrastructure, it faces unique challenges related to technologies that must be developed and deployed in support of the DHS mission.
SRI International, an independent, nonprofit research institute, provides technical, managerial, and administrative support for the Center. SRI is a leader in information security research and the creation of innovative business models and partnerships.
SRI is headquartered in Menlo Park, California (Silicon Valley), facilitating interactions with the private sector and venture capital community. SRI also provides offices and conference facilities in Arlington, Virginia (near Washington, D.C.).
